Fluxus Box

Fluxus Box based off of the movie "Les Miserables" (2012). Materials: Plywood, Balsa wood, wood glue, nails, flowers, towel cloth, Rit fabric dye, string, paper, Walnut Ink set(Java, Terra Cotta, and Walnut), Micron pens, red and black acrylic paint, twine. 15"x10". Artist Statement: The fluxus box attempts to provide a narrative based off of the movie "Les Miserables" (2012). The exterior of the box is made from plywood and a distress stain made from a mixture of ink and water. The box is not sanded, and it has exposed seams and nails, along with chunks of glue and imperfections. The box is meant to be rough due to the war that occurs, but it is also uniform and seems like an old, distressed box, similar to one from the French Revolution. When the box opens, the black underside of the lid reveals four triangular sections which intersect in the middle. The triangles represent the love triangle in the story along with the intersecting storylines and genera

On Longing

"The body is the primary mode of perceiving scale." I always enjoyed hiking and painting, and I have attached two pictures which show these passions. This was a painting I made in high school where I illustrated how little we are compared to the world around us. When you're standing on top of a mountain, your problems do not seem so big in comparison to the vast world that we live in. We become little when seeing how small our bodies are. "Capacity of objects to serve as traces of authentic experience." This was the water bottle I had when I participated in cross country in high school, and this photo illustrates the experiences of going to meets and pouring my heart out on the course. I had always struggled with breaking bones and stress fractures, and in this meet I was finally able to run and excel at something I loved to do. Touch: Pain

"Pain has plagued us throughout the history of our species. We spend our lives trying to avoid it, and, from one point of view, what we call "happiness" may be just the absence of pain... And we also talk about emotional distress as pain. Pains are often combined, the emotional with the physical, and the physical with the physical..." - Diane Ackerman ... I decided to simulate the layers of skin through the use of layers of tracing paper. I wanted to focus on the inevitable feelings of pain over time, focusing on both physical rehabilitation of the skin and emotional pain stemming from the deepest layer. I started on the deepest layer of skin, drawing a beautiful flower filled with life and strength in order to represent our bodies/skin in an ideal, pain-free world. As we live in the world and experience different forms of pain, the flower on each layer slowly begins to wither away and die.
